Franklin, TN.—March 1, 2002— StreamCast Networks, makers of the most popular peer-to-peer file sharing product, Morpheus, today announced the Morpheus Preview Edition. The Morpheus Preview Edition is the newest version of the Morpheus product, which allows millions of people to connect directly and share information.
Morpheus provides the best user experience available due to its ease of use, rapid download capabilities and powerful search tools. Software products like Morpheus are transforming the Internet as we know it into a more connected, programmable, and searchable network with many incredible uses. To date, Morpheus has been downloaded nearly 70 million times and averages 4.5 million unique users daily. This makes Morpheus the most popular P2P software product ever.
"StreamCast has always and will always continue to make strides in uniting the P2P world and providing access to this amazing communications medium despite the malicious actions taken by others this week against Morpheus users to harm their user experience," said Steve Griffin, chairman and CEO of StreamCast Networks. "Our goal is to provide the best product possible to our millions of users and to work with other companies in the P2P space to help the technology thrive. We hope that the entire P2P community can come together and find common ground to help in the advancement of this amazing technology."

Morpheus ver 1.3.3 resided on Kazaa's Fast Track protocol combined with StreamCast’s own proprietary software. Morpheus Preview Edition will reside on the Gnutella open protocol architecture which allows Morpheus to connect to millions of new users worldwide. |
“While we have been interested for some time in the possibilities of uniting the FastTrack and Gnutella architectures, going forward with an open-protocol network in a decentralized environment is ultimately most important to us,” said Darrell Smith, CTO of StreamCast Networks. “The combination of the Gnutella protocol, with our own proprietary architecture, is going to provide our users with the best experience possible, including an increase in performance. It really is the best solution for our users.”
Morpheus brings the Internet back to its roots when every computer on the Internet is both a client and a server forming a more extensible and programmable Internet in which every user is both sender and receiver. Morpheus breaks new ground with its potential to create new applications at unprecedented scale and ease allowing people to buy, sell and exchange public documents, literature, pictures, video, journalism, social commentary, music and more.
StreamCast made the decision to introduce the Morpheus Preview Edition earlier than originally planned to ensure its millions of users can resume immediate connection to the Morpheus User Network. The new version was expected to be announced in a few weeks. The previous version of Morpheus, Morpheus ver 1.3.3, resided on Kazaa's Fast Track protocol combined with StreamCast’s proprietary software. Kazaa's recent unexpected migration to FastTrack ver. 1.5 forced incompatibility between Morpheus and Kazaa’s and Grokster's versions.
